The Marks of A Worthy Servant

A Worthy Servant Contributes

Romans 16:1–2 NIV
1 I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon, of the church in Cenchreae. 2 I ask you to receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of his people and to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been the benefactor of many people, including me.
To Commend is to recommend v. — to present as worthy of regard, kindness, or confidence.
Described as a Deacon: attendant ⇔ servant n. — someone who waits on or attends to the needs of another.
1249. διάκονος diakŏnŏs, dee-ak´-on-os; prob. from an obs. διάκω diakō (to run on errands; comp. 1377); an attendant, i.e. (gen.) a waiter (at table or in other menial duties); spec. a Chr. teacher and pastor (techn. a deacon or deaconess):—deacon, minister, servant. Strong, J. (2009). A Concise Dictionary of the Words in the Greek Testament and The Hebrew Bible (Vol. 1, p. 22). Bellingham, WA: Logos Bible Software.
How did Paul tell them to receive her? They were to receive her “in the Lord.”
HIS PEOPLE: person of God ⇔ holy one n. — a person of God; understood as a person dedicated to God (morally, ritually, or by devotion).
Benefactor: female benefactor n. — a woman who contributes to the fulfillment of a need or furtherance of an effort or purpose; especially with her (financial) resources.

A Worthy Servant is Identified with the Lord

Romans 16:2 NIV
2 I ask you to receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of his people and to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been the benefactor of many people, including me.
Romans 16:11 NIV
11 Greet Herodion, my fellow Jew. Greet those in the household of Narcissus who are in the Lord.
Romans 16:12 NIV
12 Greet Tryphena and Tryphosa, those women who work hard in the Lord. Greet my dear friend Persis, another woman who has worked very hard in the Lord.
Romans 16:13 NIV
13 Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord, and his mother, who has been a mother to me, too.
Romans 16:22 NIV
22 I, Tertius, who wrote down this letter, greet you in the Lord.
IN THE LORD (ἐν Κυρίῳ, en Kuríō): A favorite Pauline expression, denoting that intimate union and fellowship of the Christian with the Lord Jesus Christ which supplies the basis of all Christian relations and conduct, and the distinctive element in which the Christian life has its specific character.
Edwards, D. M. (1915). In the Lord. In J. Orr, J. L. Nuelsen, E. Y. Mullins, & M. O. Evans (Eds.), The International Standard Bible Encyclopaedia (Vol. 1–5, p. 1466). Chicago: The Howard-Severance Company.
Romans 16:3 NIV
3 Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my co-workers in Christ Jesus.
Romans 16:7 NIV
7 Greet Andronicus and Junia, my fellow Jews who have been in prison with me. They are outstanding among the apostles, and they were in Christ before I was.
Cf the synonymous Pauline phrases, “in Christ,” “in Christ Jesus,” and the Johannine expressions, “being in Christ,” “abiding in Christ.” “In the Lord” denotes: (1) the motive, quality, or character of a Christian duty or virtue, as based on union with Christ,

A Worthy Servant is Obedient, Wise, and innocent

Romans 16:19 NIV
19 Everyone has heard about your obedience, so I rejoice because of you; but I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil.

An Unworthy Servant

Romans 16:18 NIV
18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.

A Mother to all

Romans 16:13 NIV
13 Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord, and his mother, who has been a mother to me, too.
the present context it is used to draw some special attention to Rufus as an outstanding person in the Lord’s service. Once again in the Lord’s service is literally “in the Lord” (see verse 16:2, and verse 16:9, as well as verse 16:12).

Love God More than Mother

Matthew 10:37 NIV

Retain the Knowledge of God!

Romans 1:28–32 NIV
28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. 32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.
Romans 16:1–16 NIV
1 I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon, of the church in Cenchreae. 2 I ask you to receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of his people and to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been the benefactor of many people, including me. 3 Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my co-workers in Christ Jesus. 4 They risked their lives for me. All the churches of Christ send greetings.
Deacon: attendant ⇔ servant n. — someone who waits on or attends to the needs of another.
Benefactor: female benefactor n. — a woman who contributes to the fulfillment of a need or furtherance of an effort or purpose; especially with her (financial) resources.
Psalm 125:1 NIV
1 Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever.

“In Christ Jesus” is taken by the TEV in the sense of in the service of Christ Jesus (so also NAB) and by Goodspeed with the meaning of “in the cause of Christ Jesus”; most other translations render literally.

My fellow workers in the service of Christ Jesus may be rendered as “they worked together with me in serving Christ Jesus” or “they joined with me in working for Christ Jesus.”

Quote:

The Christian Post reported last month that the “nones” group is now as large as evangelicals in the U.S., with 23.1% of those surveyed identified as having “no religion,” while those who are evangelical, and of any race, represented about 22.8%. The data was gathered through the 2018 General Social Survey, a biennial project run by the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago.
“What can be done about this devastating trend?” Rohrer asked. “And how much further will our culture fall without those who are grounded in their faith and who are engaged members of the local church? It’s not about church marketing, bigger buildings, louder music or attractive programs to entice people to choose church attendance or membership. It’s a heart matter and a matter of truth. Without debate, pastors and church leaders must lead the way in reaching out to their communities and strongly imploring that a life without Christ is no life at all, neither here on Earth nor for eternity.”
